7 Wonderful Skincare Benefits of Rosehip Oil

At Callyssee, you know we love coffee in our skincare products thanks to its superstar ability to help with diminishing the appearance of aging, dark spots, and achieving that glow you’ve always wanted. But did you know there’s plenty of other skincare ingredients we use in our products that have amazing benefits, too? Today we’re going to be talking about the many wonderful benefits of Rosehip oil, which can be found in some of our skincare products.

What is Rosehip Oil?

First, we should talk about what rosehip oil is and where this amazing ingredient comes from.

Rosehip oil, otherwise known as Rosehip Seed Oil, is extracted from the seeds of wild rose bushes. While it can be found all over the world, it’s most commonly extracted in South America, from rose bushes in Chile - more specifically the Andes mountains. Rosehip seeds have been used in folk medicine for many years thanks to their many antioxidant properties and essential fatty acids.

According to Wikipedia, Rosehips have “prophylactic and therapeutic actions against the common cold, infectious diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, urinary tract diseases, and inflammatory diseases,” which is why they were used for medicinal purposes. According to Dr. Axe, rosehip oil was even made into a syrup for children in Britain during wartime to build immunity against infection.

As we mentioned earlier, rosehip oil comes from the seeds of wild rose bushes - not roses or rosebuds like you might see in a floral arrangement. The actual oil is extracted from the berry (seed) of the bush, which is where that gorgeous, bright orange color comes from.

Once the seeds are harvested, they are usually cold-pressed to separate the oil from the seeds, giving us the rosehip oil that we love! Cold-pressing the oil ensures the ingredients keep their integrity.

The Benefits of Rosehip Oil in Skincare

Clearly, there are many health benefits to rosehip oil that prove why this ingredient has been used for centuries in medicine and healing.

Now we need to talk about the amazing skincare benefits that this oil provides - and why you should start incorporating it into your beauty routine ASAP, because according to the Advanced Dermatology of Memphis, “if there’s one oil that pretty much does it all, it’s this one.” We’ll take it!

1. Anti-Aging Properties

Who doesn’t want their skin to look younger? Thanks to its high amount of antioxidants, rosehip oil can help. High in Vitamins C and A, some might even consider the ingredients as a natural retinol thanks to its ability to help brighten the skin while also increasing elasticity and collagen production.

2. Protects Against Sun Damage

Since rosehip oil is high in antioxidants, it can be used to combat the effects of sun damage and photoaging because Vitamin A and Vitamin C work together to combat visible sun damage. Don’t use rosehip oil in place of SPF, though - make sure you’re still applying an SPF 30 or higher everyday to prevent further sun damage.

3. Soothes Inflammation

Do you suffer from inflammatory skin concerns like eczema or rosacea? Rosehip oil can help. Because the oil is so rich in Vitamin E and anthocyanin, it can be extremely beneficial for soothing inflammation and redness and even helping with dry or itchy skin patches.

4. Extremely Hydrating and Moisturizing

Thanks to its high concentration of essential fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acid, rosehip oil is a great oil to keep the skin moisturized and hydrated. Fatty acids help keep cell walls strong so that they don’t lose water, which is why if your skin is lacking hydration you might love incorporating rosehip oil into your daily routine. You can also use a few drops of the oil in your hair to keep it hydrated.

5. Great for All Skin Types

While there are some face oils that are better for dry skin and some that work better for acne-prone or oily skin, rosehip oil is generally considered to be safe and effective for all skin types by many skincare professionals. Just one more reason why this amazing oil is great for use in any skincare routine!

6. Helps Brighten Skin Tone

If you have acne-prone skin, the marks that acne leaves behind might leave your skin feeling dull. Well, rosehip oil has been shown to brighten skin tone because it’s high in Vitamins C and A, which help with cell turnover and cell regeneration to help boost your overall radiance and give your skin a natural glow.

7. Fades Scars

Rosehip oil has been known to help fade dark marks, scars, and even stretch marks on the body because of the antioxidants that help aid in cell regeneration and encourage tissue regeneration. According to Healthline, “in a 2015 study, participants with post-surgical scars treated their incision site twice per day with topical rosehip oil. After 12 weeks of use, the group using rosehip oil experienced significant improvements in scar color and inflammation when compared to the group who received no topical treatment.”
