"My Pride, My Skin" - Kellie Pink

Have you ever walked into a room and felt everyone staring at you? I LOVE that feeling!

As a child, I always wanted to turn heads whether it was with my fashion, makeup, or my personality, but never did I imagine that my sexuality would be the biggest head turner of them all. Although I grew up in New York City, homophobia was always around. Growing up I would constantly hear the word “f*****” and it was always triggering. Even if it was “just a joke,” I wondered why people felt the need to say hurtful things. Personally, I never questioned my sexuality. I have always just liked what I like. When I found a girl that made my stomach flutter, I said to my mom “See this cute ring? My new girlfriend gave it to me”. Mother wasn’t too happy and gave me the whole “it’s just a phase” speech. All I responded was “I guess we’ll see about that.”

My family had every excuse as to why I was “acting out.” It was everything from devil worshipping to not having a father in my life. It hurt to hear those words coming from my loved ones. “Why couldn’t this just be who i am?” I asked, and the only real answer i got was “because God doesn’t approve of gay people.” I mean - God doesn’t like cheaters, thieves, liars... yet my family members were all of those things. From that moment I decided not only would I always stand up for myself, but I would stand up for others who felt alone and ashamed. Here I am, 13 years later; a plus-size lesbian activist for body positivity and human rights.

My recommendation for anyone struggling would be to just be yourself. I know it sounds cliche but it’s the best advice anyone ever gave to me. People aren’t always going to like you, so why hide who you are? Life is so much better once you start living as your authentic self; That is why I became an influencer. Giving people the spark they need to thrive is the most incredible feeling I’ve ever experienced. So, if your family doesn’t quite understand who you are, you don’t need them. The beautiful thing about the LGBTQ+ community is that you can choose your family and that family can save your life. I’m so honored to be working with Callyssee and whether or not you are part of the LGBTQ+ community, I hope that my message inspires you to live your best life and be authentic, at least!

Always remember, you are strong, beautiful and loved!
