Celebrate Pride Month With Callyssee

Posted on

This June, in honor of Pride, Callyssee will be celebrating all month long, right here on our blog. Before we get into the details of how we’ll be celebrating this very important month, we wanted to give a short history of how Pride month began, taken from the Library of Congress:

On June 28, 1970, on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Thousands of LGBT+ people gathered to commemorate Stonewall and demonstrate for equal rights. The events of Stonewall and the liberation movements that followed were a direct result of prior decades of LGBT+ activism and organizing.

Throughout the month of June, we’ll be opening our platform to guests blog posts from members of the LGBTQIA+ community, giving them a chance to tell their story. We’ll also be donating a portion of our sales during the month of June to the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit organization with a mission to uplift, empower, and connect lesbian, gay, transgender, and queer youth around the globe.

Our theme for guest blog posts this month is “My Pride, My Skin.” Many members of the Pride community turn to self-care practices like skincare rituals and beauty as forms of expression. We’re giving our guest bloggers the opportunity to share their own stories through words of encouragement and personal history of how they became comfortable in their own skin and with their sexuality. Here’s an excerpt from one of our guest blogs for a sneak peek of what to expect this month. You’ll be able to read more stories, like Ara’s story below, throughout the month of June, right here on the Callyssee blog!

“Coming out is both one of the most liberating, and terrifying things one can do for themselves. At the time of writing this, I have only been “out” for three weeks, and I’m grateful to find myself having stepped fully into my truth a few months before Pride Month. This is still so fresh to me, and yet, it is something that has been seeking acknowledgement, always existing within. I am in celebration, and I am in mourning. This, I know, is part of the unravelling process. In it, we find a deeply intimate pain, and also, strength.”

What makes you feel comfortable in your own skin? Share your stories in the comments below. If you or someone you know is looking for more resources and information about Pride Month and the LGBTQIA+ community, this is a great list. Happy Pride Month!
