Lip Liner Tips and Techniques

Lip liner is one makeup product that’s a must-have in any makeup bag. Whether you like to go full glam on the daily or keep it pretty neutral, a lip liner completes any makeup look by giving your lips definition and can also create a base for your lipstick or gloss. But since lips come in all sorts of shapes, colors, and sizes, there’s not one universal technique for using a lip liner. In fact, the hashtag #lipliner has almost 700 million views on TikTok - so clearly people have thoughts on it. We’ve pulled together some of the best tips and techniques for using lip liner below, so get ready to improve your liner game!

Use Lip Liner As a Primer

If your lipstick always smudges and can’t seem to stay in one place, a lip liner might fix the problem. When you use a lip liner first, it helps create a border for the lipstick to stay in - like coloring inside the lines. Just make sure your lips are properly prepped for makeup before applying any lip products to help them last longer.

Use Lip Liner to Intensify Your Lipstick

By creating a sharp border on the lip line, you can help define and intensify the lip shape before applying lipstick to add drama since it’s hard to achieve a sharp line with just a lipstick bullet. It’s also a great way to ensure your lipstick stays on your lips and doesn't smudge outside of the lip line border.

Use Lip Liner to Fake Fuller Lips

By slightly overexaggerating the lip line using a liner, you can create the illusion of fuller, poutier lips. Be sure to keep it balanced by overdrawing the line on both the bottom and top of your lips and feathering it into the center. A dab of lip gloss in the center of your bottom lip will also help your lips appear fuller combined with lip liner.

Use Lip Liner to Create Balance

Is your bottom lip bigger than your top lip? Does one side of your cupid’s bow sit a little higher? Lip liner is a great solution to creating balance in asymmetric lips - simply overline the smaller side to match the bigger side, et voila!

Use Two Shades for a Graphic Lip Look

By using a darker color on the outer corners and a lighter color on the center, you can create a graphic lip look that gives the illusion of a fuller pout. Be sure to blend them so you don’t have any stark lines.

Use Lip Liner to Try Kim Kardashian’s Makeup Artist Technique

If you’re a makeup fan you’ve deifnitely heard of Makeup by Mario, Kim Kardashian's longtime makeup artist and friend. He recently went viral on TikTok for his #MariosLipLift technique with lip liner. Here’s how it works:

  • Slightly overline the Cupid’s bow then draw the line downwards
  • Overline the center of the bottom lip only, do not overline the corners of the bottom lip because that will cause the lips to appear to droop downward - just extend the line upwards from the overlined center
  • Blend and diffuse the lines and then clean up the edges with concealer or a cotton swab
  • Top with your favorite lipstick or gloss

How to Prep Your Lips for Makeup

Want to know how to achieve soft, smoother lips for the perfect base for makeup? It all starts with prepping the lips beforehand.

First, you’ll want to exfoliate - this doesn’t have to be anything fancy. You can easily make a homemade lip scrub with coconut oil and brown sugar - simply mix the two together then scrub on your lips to remove dry patches or dead skin. Remove with a warm, damp washcloth. You can also use a toothbrush to gently buff your lips if you don’t have a scrub handy!

Next, you should apply a moisturizing ointment-type lip balm like Aquaphor, Vaseline or Dr. Paw Paw to seal in moisture. Leave the lip balm on until you are ready to apply makeup.

Keep your lips hydrated and soft by drinking lots of water and regularly applying your favorite lip balms or oils, esepcially before you go to sleep.
