Do you really need to use eye cream? What skincare to use on your under eye area

Is under eye care a part of your current skincare routine? What once was a forgotten area only reserved for anti-aging products and your grandma’s beauty cabinet, the under eye skincare market is becoming increasingly popular across most beauty brands. Nearly all skincare lines include some sort of designated eye product - but is it necessary?

In this article, we’ll explore the purpose of an eye cream or treatment, who should use eye cream (hint: everyone), and share our favorite methods and products for reducing puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. Keep reading if you’re curious about how to treat this delicate area!

What is the purpose of eye cream? Why do I need to use one?

There is plenty of debate in the skincare community on whether or not an eye cream is necessary. On the one hand, there are certain skin conditions that an eye cream can treat, even if temporary. However, there are some under eye skin concerns that an eye cream won’t really make much of a difference in - for example, dark circles caused by genetics versus dark circles caused by lack of sleep would require different treatments.

An eye cream won’t fix genetically caused issues, but it can certainly help with issues like dehydration, puffiness, dryness, fine lines, and more.

The purpose of using an eye cream can range from helping soften the appearance of fine lines, hydrating the under eye area, treating dryness, reducing puffiness, brightening the under eye area, and more.

Depending on your specific skin concerns, you may or may not need to use an eye cream. However, keeping the under eye area hydrated is always a good idea - it will help any makeup you apply under your eyes go on smoother, help you look more well rested, and even temporarily smooth out any fine lines.

So, technically you don’t need to use an eye cream, but we definitely recommend using some sort of product to keep your under eye area moisturized and hydrated as part of your regular skincare routine.

Can I use the same products that I use on my face in my under eye area?

Yes and no. The skin under your eyes is very thin and delicate compared to the rest of the skin on your face, so you definitely need to be gentle with the area. So, for example you wouldn’t use a strong exfoliant or acne treatment under your eyes, because it would be way too harsh for the area. But a simple facial moisturizer or cream with no active ingredients could be used under the eyes to hydrated the area.

That said, we definitely recommend using a designated product for your under eyes since it will likely have more targeted ingredients to treat your specific under eye concerns. Plus, the ingredients were specially chosen to be gentle on the under eye area, which is also important.

You’ll know what fits best into your lifestyle and skincare routine, but if you’ve never used an eye cream before and you have some skincare concerns with your under eye area, it’s worth trying one out!

Our favorite must-have under eye treatments and products

Now that you know why we recommend treating your under eye area as part of your skincare routine, allow us to introduce three of our must-have skincare products that will make you look more awake by brightening the under eye area and reducing puffiness.

Eye Cream

An eye cream, in our opinion, is an essential in any skincare routine. This firming eye cream is our go-to solution to wake your eyes up and diminish the appearance of wrinkles and dryness. A blend of Vitamin A, Shea Butter, Glycerin and Coffea Arabica (Organic Green Coffee) Seed Extract work hard to reveal an appearance that is smoother and wrinkle-free. Plus, the luxurious texture feels so nice to apply under the eyes - it’s a real treat to use!

Eye Serum

Maybe you don’t love the idea of using a rich under eye cream -  no worries, we have a solution for you: an eye serum. This firming eye serum might feel lightweight, but the ingredients seriously pack a punch.

Featuring a rich blend of ingredients, this gentle serum helps to reduce the appearance of dark circles, puffiness and fine lines to keep your skin looking young and fresh. One of the main ingredients, Bisabolol, is known for having anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant powers to moisturize the under eye area and restore the skin's suppleness. Jojoba Oil helps to even the skin tone and brighten tired-looking eyes. And finally, the rockstar ingredient, Coffea Arabica (Organic Green Coffee) Seed Extract works to keep your eyes hydrated and revitalized. It’s the perfect eye serum to treat your under eyes morning AND night!

Under Eye Masks

If you’re prone to puffiness, you know how annoying it is to wake up after a long night with puffy eye bags. But fear not, because under eye masks are our go-to treatment for diminishing the appearance of dark, puffy under eye bags. Instead of using concealer, try an under eye mask to target the problem instead of covering it up.

These caffeinated under eye masks are amazing at reducing wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles. With ingredients like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and green tea extract, your puffy under-eyes are no match for this mask. It only takes 15 minutes to get the full benefits of this mask, so you can do it while you’re putting on makeup, walking your dog, or checking emails! P.S. We keep it in the fridge for a cooling effect upon application.
